Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United States of AmericaA few things to note. I knew ahead of time and I did not mind these things. However, you might. 1. Since this is a house, you will be occupying a room and be 1 out of 3 guests staying there per night. This means there is no restroom in your room. You share one with the other guests in the house. This means walking out of your room and going to the shared house toilet. It wasn't an issue for us, and I never ran into anyone in the restroom. 2. Since there is no restroom in the room, naturally there is no shower. Each guest will need to book a time to use the shower room that has a small onsen bath. The host will explain everything during check in, but if you aren't comfortable with these things, you should find another place.
The ryokan is owned and run by a lovely couple. The breakfast was delicious and the hospitality was exceptional. I booked this place because I wanted to experience sleeping on a traditional Japanese bedding on tatami. The house itself has been passed down for generations and is absolutely beautiful.

United States of AmericaOnly downside is the noise from the road. It’s fine after midnight, but can be difficult to fall asleep if you’re sensitive to noise.
The most wonderful couple own this ryokan! They were so kind and generous. You can get dinner and/or breakfast for an extra fee (8800 for dinner per person, 2200 for breakfast per person). We opted for just breakfast because we planned to do a hike in the evening, and it was spectacular! The onsen was also very lovely. We loved our stay here and would come back in a heartbeat!

This was one of the best experiences we’ve had in a while. We really enjoyed our stay at Kikokuso. The Ryokan was beautiful with a cute garden with Kois. The room was confortable and cosy. It was our first time sleeping on futons but we slept really well. The breakfasts (traditional Japanese breakfasts) were amazing. We also had shabu shabu diner on the second night and it was de-li-cious! The family hot bath was just perfect after a long day of walk in Kyoto. Finally, the family that runs the inn was just the nicest people you could ever meet. We will definitely come back the next time we come to Kyoto!!

Everything was great!! We stayed at upstairs room, so we had separate bathroom. The room was very good and authentic, big enough. They have a public bathroom downstairs like onsen, you can reserve a timeline to use it privately. Hosts were very very friendly.

United States of AmericaThere was nothing I really did not like, the whole stay was excellent. I wish I would have had enough time to enjoy their breakfast. One thing to keep in mind is again, the tatami mats, as they may be uncomfortable if you are on the older side and have never slept on one before.
Public bath room was awesome. They also provided robes for us to change into which were really comfortable. The rooms were spacious and quiet, though I will say it can be hard for older folks to get used to a tatami mat.

United States of AmericaEverything about this place was marvelous. The owners were incredibly friendly and kind — they waved us goodbye when we checked out. The room was spacious and we had a nice view of the garden below. The hot tub experience was excellent, and incredibly relaxing. Breakfast was delicious. It was incredibly comfortable and the most relaxing stay we had in Japan.

United KingdomI was happy with everything but my OH found the futons too hard for his ageing bones and hardly slept. Japanese beds & mattresses are harder than westerners are used to and that’s OK, it’s all part of the experience and must be accepted. It’s just that this is difficult when suffering a crochetty, tired husband!
The delightful couple that run this old family business are exceptionally kind and hospitable. The husband is chef and prepares the most wonderful, authentically Japanese meals which were a highlight of our stay. I loved our 2 tatami mat rooms with the futons, low table and paper screens at the windows, which made for a very traditional experience for overawed Europeans. There is a beautiful ornamental fish pond and garden too! We a are retired couple & had the one room with private facilities, travelling in March 2024.

New ZealandThis was my first experience staying in a traditional ryokan and wow, it did not disappoint! The family who own and run this ryokan are absolutely lovely and took time to explain everything, offering green tea and a sweet on arrival. It was so peaceful and relaxing looking out on the internal courtyard garden. I had the best sleep! The traditional Japanese breakfast was amazing. If you want to experience a ryokan in Kyoto, stay here!

CanadaHonestly nothing, the entire stay was great
My partner and I got to have dinner and breakfast at the ryokan, both of which were absolutely incredible. We also got a wonderful room with a balcony and got to use the onsen, which was amazing! Overall, the entire time was incredible, and the staff went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable.

United States of AmericaTravelers note that there's no late night access to the Ryokan, and they weren't able to help us store our bags on the day we left.

United States of AmericaNothing not to like!!
This beautiful ryokan was a highlight of our stay in Kyoto. The staff are an older couple who made us feel right at home (they even greeted us with a heartwarming "welcome home" every time we came back!). From beginning to end, the koi pond, the private hot bath, the yukatas, and the beautiful breakfast all made this a truly unforgettable experience for my partner and me. We highly recommend it.

NetherlandsI don't think that there was anything we did not like. The low Japanese tables for the meals made sitting difficult, but for the experience we would not have missed it for the world.
This is a wonderful traditional inn. The hosts could not have been more friendly and attentive. The inside of the ryokan was beautifully designed with an attractive fish pond and outside with a garden. The bedroom was tastefully designed in the traditional Japanese style. The beef shabu shabu for dinner was quite nice but we were particularly impressed with the breakfast, with each dish explained to us by the hosts. The onsen, which we used, was a great addition. Finally, when we left and needed a taxi the hosts found one for us within a minute and saw us off.
