The town is Ok for a day & night.
The town is Ok for a day & night. The cathedral at 12pm is the biggest thing in town and it is worth a look for the curious. Note all the bars around the square have a surcharge just to sit down - which they don't advertise. Try the Sri Lankan restaurants around town, delicious food at a great price.

we only stayed 3 nights, the area we stayed was very busy not far from ferry crossings. We visited Taormina and Cefalu, 2 nearby cities. Didn't get to see much of Messina itself. Did visit beach which was very nice.

Messina doesn't have a lot of attractions - the Camponile was interesting to see at midday, as well as the Norman cathedral, for which you could really see the Mudejar influence - something I found surprising for Italy.
OTOH, it also means there were fewer tourists about, which suited us to a tee.
If you are into hiking, it looks like the mountains above the city would have some nice trails with views out over both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas.

Messina was really just a jumping onto Sicily spot where I met up with friends coming from other locations. great for our trip to Lipari, otherwise I would not have stayed three days.
There were good restaurants and some not so good so always look at the menus first. and check open times, there is no such thing as a late lunch as they all close by about 2.30pm
Interesting history and buildings.
Just explore, you will find hidden treasures.
Big cruise ships stop here so the city can get very busy.

Visiting Etna was great.
Visiting Etna was great. It’s about 1.5 hrs away Nothing open on a Monday so walking around town was a bit of a waste. There really is not much to see. Taormina which is about 45 minutes away is the place to spend your time.
We stayed 1 night while train traveling the coast of Sicily and transfer to The mainland. This was steps away from the train station, very convenient. The room was new and very nice, communication from Sergio was very thorough to enter the building and the building was very safe. Breakfast was served in a little breakfast room and good choices. We had a good night before traveling on. We walked the area a bit in search of dinner and came upon a good sidewalk bar/ cafe in the closest square and other food choices.
Fantastic location, right on the sea front of the Straits of Messina. Great private garden and two cabin like rooms in a secure area, with access to a private beach. The kitchen area was outdoors in the garden and had wonderful views of the sea whilst having a morning coffee and watching the ships sail by. The hosts were very friendly, welcoming and hospitable. Restaurants and shops were a short walk away.
My host Carmelo, was very attentive and kind. He went out of his way to assist me in finding a clinic in Messina,Sicily where I could get a Covid Molecular test in order to board my flight back to Montreal,Canada! The bed was very comfortable and the Air Conditioning functioned well. I had a fresh espresso coffee awaiting me both mornings I stayed there! Grazie Carmelo! Concetta dal 🇨🇦
I arrived late to hotel. Stuff was really gentle. Morning breakfast was also perfect enough. Rooms were clean. Also after breakfast I needed to go to Messina central station, thanks to owner, he took me and I arrive on time. I'm really thankful to all of you, guys from here😊 you're doing perfect job, I really appreciated👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The little hotel is very close to the centre. The owners are beyond friendly! I sprained my ankle on my first night and they were so sweet and helpful with all the needs I suddenly had!
I am so thankful for this! It is by far nothing you would expect- but especially for solo traveling it is amazing to find caring people like this!
We loved our stay at La Casa Di Ale. The host was so sweet and accommodating, bringing us special treats. The facility was absolutely beautiful and extremely well kept. Such a beautiful view of the sea and your own private beach to enjoy. Are only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer. One of our favorite stays in all of Sicily.
We stayed as an overnight stopover. The property is super clean, breakfast was good and substantial. The room was a good size and very clean. The host was great as he waited for us as he had an issue with the ferry coming from Calabria. Close to Messina city centre if you have a car.
I was able to check in at night after ferry arrival.
The breakfast display was the best we've seen in Italy. So many items: pane, canolis, cereals, eggs, bacon, juices, fruits sliced, nuts, toast, granita, meats and cheeses, etc.
Location near train station.
rooms are clean and spacious, all needed furniture, wall sockets etc. are available, good breakfast, very friendly staff - they pay attention to customers and take time to care about them, free parking at the front of the hotel
The hotel is close to the ferry port at Messina and a ideal place to stay. There is a secure underground carpark and the staff were friendly. The bar was nice and the breakfast delicious with a wide variety of food.
The appartment was excellent, it was a pleasure to spend a night there, would’ve loved to stay longer!
This is a great place to enjoy the views of Messina’s harbour.
Thank you Patrizia!
Great location, well equipped kitchen, there was heating, which is rare in Sicily and when outside is +7 it is nice to have warm apartment and also good internet to work.
Was good, similar to most Italian hotel breakfasts. Did get freshly squeezed orange. Lovely. Staff, although not fluent in English did their best . Very friendly.
The hotel was clean and modern and reception Mr Giovanni was so helpful and kind.
Everything was perfect!
However you should aware messina isn’t a tourist place.
The Hotel and rooms are extraordinary!
