It was out first experience in a ryokan and we couldn't be more pleased! The reception was smooth and came with complimentary tea and snacks, and the staff clearly explained the facilities and it's many onsens. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor onsen as well as the standing onsen.
The location is great, just a short walk to explore the rest of Kurokawa Onsen, and the famous Patisserie Roku is just down the steps. Dinner was excellent and gently paced, and the grounds are really magical at night. The fluffy futon was laid out during dinner and we all had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was also delicious!

Shinmeikan is a truly amazing ryokan/ onsen. The whole building just oozes authenticity.
Great tatami style rooms overlooking the river, super friendly staff who will help you with all your needs. Great onsen baths, especially the cave bad is spectacular.
Dinner and breakfast are equally high quality and display a variety of Japanese cuisine.
Absolute perfect place if you want to experience traditional Japanese onsen style ryokan.

Fantastic range of indoor and outdoor public and private onsen at the property. (Note it’s not in Kurokawa Onsen town, but about 2km away. However, everything you need is here.) Super friendly welcome. Great traditional Japanese room. Stargazing, a traditional robata (firepit) and fireside sake were complimentary. Outstanding kaiseki cooking. It was so good that we are recommending it as a honeymoon destination to our family.
