Wanted to eat in proper Irish pub with live music as we have done at several other locations. Loads of bars, none serving food. Plenty of takeaways but didn’t want to sit on a bench to eat. Stayed at end of holiday so wanted to take home some local produce, cheese, bread, cakes but just one supermarket selling same as UK. Handy stopping off point between Killarney and Dublin but little else going for it

The town is not what we expected!
The town is not what we expected! There are so many pubs and restaurants who do both sit down and take away meals. Lots of live music coming from several pubs walking up and down the town. Very nice place! Only 50 minutes from the Red Cow so we were able to get the Luas into Dublin. Although we drove ourselves, we saw lots of taxis so I'd imagine it's very easy to get around.

I reviewed Harry Potter Themed guest house, in the house room 4. The response I received was appalling to say the least. To say I should have booked the Hilton because I mentioned we had to collect our key from a table, with no one to give us bath towels that were not supplied in the bathroom and that the shower was dirty and not cleaned since last person used it and foul smell in the bathroom. Also no fire escape plan and dangerous exposed wires for the lighted cotton wool over the bed is childish and insulting. I am not posh in any way. Just expect a clean safe room. This is not a response anyone should expect from any accommodation.

Portlaoise is well located in the midlands of Ireland about 1 hour S East of Dublin. There are many historical, cultural and scenic locations in close proximity and it is a great stop over if travelling further south to Cork Kerry and further afield- - but dont just stop over spend a few days exploring the area of Laois - The Slieve Bloom mountains, The Rock of Dunamaise, several golf courses, fishing, cycling, the round tower of Timahoe, Stradbally steam museum and a host of other places too!!
The town is just off junction 16 & 17 of the M7 motorway and has great bus and train service too. There are a variety of hotels & b&B available with urban and rural locations to suit your budget.
Check it out! : )
The breakfast was fantastic...the best we had in our 9-day stay in Ireland. The location was convenient to the train station and close to town where all the shops and restaurants were. The inn was quaint. Be aware that check-in time is 5. We were kindly accommodated for our early arrival. (If you arrive early you might not be able to get in at all until check-in time.)
When first checking in I was presented with the breakfast menu for the following days. It had a variety of options but as I was mostly using public transport I stuck eating cereal. It is also perfectly situated halfway between the train station and the main street, with a multi-story car park and cinema across the street.
This was our first time staying at the Iveigh House Hotel, Portlaoise, from the arrival to our check out time everything was excellent. The personal touches, greeting upon arrival, early check requested, a location with tons of character, centrally located and a breakfast which was superb, well done !
Very clean room. Nice leisure centre with pool, sauna and gym. Good selection of breakfast items. Very comfortable and modern. It is very accessible to get to as it is located within a big open industrial car park with other food places on offer around the hotel. Hotel is located beside the motorway
rooms were side by side as requested, a nice double bed and one single, with hairdryer, ironing board, tea coffee facilities provided. nice size room. Drinks in the bar served promptly with nice staff. leisure centre is OK, small enough pool. hotel was quiet with good sound proofing windows.
Great location easily accessible and close proximity to all the main shopping facilities and restaurants.
The food was great and very well presented the staff friendly and professional.
We had a wonderful break and have recommend the hotel to our friends. Thank You and We will be back. 😊
Pleasant stay, owner was v. Nice. Room could have done with a tv that had free to air channels, as only has now tv, which needed to be paid for in order to watch. (Not great to be fair).
"Welcome" note only had a list of charges for breaking the rules.
Room clean and warm.
Very well situated in the middle of town, super friendly staff, lovely spacious room, room and bathroom were spotless. Breakfast was lovely.
I think Portlaoise (abd Laois in general) is not enough advertized by Tourism Ireland but this lovely town has stolen my heart!
For the 5th time in a month we were refused entry to the restaurant because they take bookings from outside before looking after their guests. Charged me for breakfast and then said they would not serve us breakfast before 8am. Worst hotel experience in all of Ireland.
staff and food there are fabulous. was there for a wedding staff were brilliant with the whole event. anyone looking for a venue for wedding Killeshin Hotel is definitely worth a look. I got an early check in so could get ready in hotel
Lunch at bar was great. Supper at Kelly’s was good food. Servers could have been more attentive, but it was later in evening and they were tired, I guess. Parking garage was best we ever saw in Ireland.
Nice hotel, good beds, excellent breakfast, plenty of parking...it was an unexpected surprise for us--better than the other hotels we stayed at during our two week trip to UK and Ireland.
My room at the Maldron Hotel Portlaoise was very clean and exceeded my expectations. My stay was pleasant and the staff members were very helpful and kind. The breakfast was delicious.
