Coll is typical of Lewis, but played a vital part in the revolt by crofters against Lord Leverhulme's attempt to tranform the economy of the Outer Hebrides by creating larger and much more efficient farms and a fishery industry to exploit seafood more than had been the way. But the crofters (returning from fighting World War One) set greater store by their independence and traditional small land-holdings, and broke the law to win their case. The memorial to this struggle was a short walk from the rental property.
