Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel, hotel in Canterbury

In 2 acres of landscaped gardens, Abbots Barton Hotel has a traditional restaurant and elegant rooms with free Wi-Fi. The hotel is just outside Canterbury centre, half a mile from Canterbury...

A grand gothic style Victorian hotel set just on the outskirts of the city centre, just a 7/10 min walk away. Refreshing not to stay in a bland brand hotel. Parts have recently been refurbished. We stayed in an older section of the hotel which was completely comfortable and clean. It was interesting to see how our tastes in hotel decor have changed over the years! We were welcomed warmly with a Bonio dog treat at reception. The charming manager helped us throughout our stay. Breakfast was excellent, a good selection on a fresh buffet with delicious local Kent apple juice. All hot items cooked to order. We stayed in a large family room with our spaniel who was able to eat with us at the bar. Great price, great service & breakfast all with a comfortable Britishness. We will be returning in the near future.

Thomas Ingoldsby Wetherspoon, hotel in Canterbury

Located in Canterbury, within a few steps of Canterbury Cathedral and 4.1 km of University of Kent, Thomas Ingoldsby Wetherspoon provides accommodation with a restaurant and a bar, and free WiFi...

We enjoyed it so much that we booked an extra night. The rooms were clean and comfortable with good facilities. The pub and restaurant were affordable as were the room rates. It felt very safe with the keycard entry to the hotel floor. The location was great for all the touristy things you would want to do and see whilst in Canterbury.

FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

We loved exploring the Kent area whilst based in Canterbury.

We loved exploring the Kent area whilst based in Canterbury. We did 3 x Day trips - to Whitstable, Margate and Ramsgate. Then the White Cliffs of Dover and on our final day did a day trip to Dover Castle.

Beautiful with loads of independent shops. Really beautiful gems around the cathedral. Difficult to find decent parking in town. Public car parks not cheap and can’t vouch for their safety. Most city centre hotels don’t have their own car parks…which is a big problem.

I know Canterbury well as parents have lived in many locations surrounding the area including Reculver, Herne Bay, Seasalter, Whitstable. Not easy to get around from area to close area outside Canterbury using taxis. No taxis from various train stations to various surrounding areas. When travelling with friend in wheel chair it was a nightmare. Could not get any taxis. Luckily we were able to rely on relatively good bus services using disabled free bus passes.

The cathedral was beautiful ! The neighborhood has a lot of walkable streets wear tennis shoes though uneven pavements , very unsafe feeling environment where cycles park. There is limited parking there so you have to park blocks away and pay a premium.

We only stayed one night and saw everything we wanted to around the city; had we come by car we would have gone further afield and I am sure there were buses but this was deliberately a one night city break and we covered everything by walking. Local independent shops were good, Corkk for English wines and good coffee shop opposite Burgate Coffee Shop with fantastic cakes. The Parrot and The Dolphin served good food and drinks.

Canterbury is a lovely old historical partly walled City, it has a beautiful Cathedral and a castle well worth visiting. The high st is a mixture of modern and quaint old shops, the older buildings/architecture is lovely to see. Great variety of cafes/restaurants/pubs to visit . We visited the Olive Grove for dinner on the first night great food , very friendly staff, good atmosphere! Guided walks available throughout the day & evening . Two days was not enough to see & do all we wanted, Will definitely be back again soon.

Breakfast is better than I expected and the hotel allows dogs to be with us in the restaurant. Everyone is super friendly, they welcome dogs very much. There is a huge free-run area behind the hotel for dogs and chill. The parking area is in front of the hotel, we feel very safe parking there. It is just 10 mins walk to the city centre, and a lot of supermarkets nearby. I highly recommend the EBURY hotel and would love to stay again.

Everything about our stay was amazing. The Falstaff is perfectly located in Canterbury, it's a 3-min walk from the city centre and just a stone's throw away from a number of amazing pubs and restaurants. The staff are really friendly, they upgraded us for free and the overall atmosphere was great. The bar and the restaurant in the hotel itself are totally worth checking out. Fantastic cocktails and tasty pizza. We had an amazing stay

Room was comfortable, with en-suite, tv, tea and coffee facilities. No iron in room but easy enough to get hold of one from reception. Bar area available as well as eating facilities. We only had breakfast on one day which was alright, would prefer to eat out at a local cafe if staying again. Plenty of parking available. The hotel is a lovely 15 minute walk outside the centre of Canterbury. The staff were very helpful and friendly.

Location, just outside the City Gate -- easy walk into centre and the cathedral. The Dickens Room was clean, light, airy and spacious, with view of city wall tower. Not noisy, in spite of facing on a busy street. Staff was helpful with parking next door and a city map. Breakfast was attractive and generous, but lacking in protein. Everything was sweet. A boiled egg, or some cheese would benefit people with blood sugar concerns.

The property is perfectly located just a short distance from Canterbury city centre, in a dead end close that is very quiet and peaceful. Unlike a previous reviewer who just looked at the road and turned around as it's a working class area, I never found it intimidating the exact opposite to be honest. The property was very clean and the beds everyone said they were very comfortable, Overall this property is a great base camp.

It was just as expected … a quaint, older, quiet pub and inn. We didn’t want to visit England and stay in a big franchised Hotel. Comfortable bed. The room included a couch (which would make into a bed). The bathroom was very clean and updated. And all of the staff were helpful and friendly. Gave us some great advise on visiting in downtown Canterbury. And dinner was convenient, just ran downstairs.

Continental breakfast was very good with excellent choice of food available. Staff very friendly and helpful. Loved the city centre location so close to the many attractions Canterbury has to offer, and literally right opposite the Marlowe Theatre which couldn't be more convenient when seeing a show there. My second stay at the Pilgrim Hotel and will definitely be back!

This hotel is smart and comfortable, with helpful staff and a great location in the history-steeped town centre. (You can even see a fragment of the Roman amphitheatre remains through the floor of the reception area.) Our room was large and comfortable. The area the hotel is in is amazing. We loved that it opened into the closed off courtyard of the cathedral. It made it seem like we had the whole place to ourselves, after a certain hour. Also, the sparkling water station was above and beyond.
