It is a small and charming city. The best, by far, attraction is the Park of Obelisks. The modern St. Mary of Zion Church is a visit for those interested in religion and anthropologic experiences. The other archaeological sites are much less impressive, but if you do a good research before visiting them they'll get much more interesting.

Aksum has been spoiled by tourism, it is now one of those rotten sites where everyone harasses one constantly for money and prices are inflated for everything. Too bad. What one can see, especially as a woman - the most interesting places are forbidden - are limited in value considering the ticket price. Actually the most interesting site - the major stela field - is open and free, and so is the lovely walk up to Sheba's baths. (That is a tip) It is really not an essential stop in itself.

Excellent cultural and historic experience.
Excellent cultural and historic experience. We saw everything we expected to see, thanks to our excellent guides Solomon Tesfay and Abator. The history of the area is amazing, and as an architect and history buff it was an experience to see the skill and craftsmanship of these ancient monuments and churches.

Nice city with several archaeological sites in and around the city. Worthwhile visiting. Unless you plan to visit other places far from the city, one day (or, 2 nights, depending on what time of the day you arrive in Aksum) should be sufficient to visit the archaeological sites in and around the city.

On the second day he recommended us to start 5 o'clock in the morning to see the prayer where more that 10 000 locals marched and sang peacefully in the streets. I will never forget it.

Stelea Park and Queen Sheba Palace are the highlights of the City. I could not see the St Mary of Zion Church as it is under renovation. I love the cobble stone road and paths around the city. I felt like I was back in Europe:)
