Hotel Myosen

Hotel in Akakura Onsen, Myoko

Located near the center of Akakura and only a 5-minute walk to ski elevators, Hotel Myosen offers accommodations with separate hot spring baths for male and female. Our stay at Hotel Myosen was exceptional. We loved the breakfast each morning, the quiet building, comfortable beds and most of all the natural mineral water onsen. Soaking after a day of skiing was a treat. The staff was very helpful with directions to get there and also helped us ship our giant ski bags onward. We couldn’t have asked for a better stay and would recommend Myosen to anyone.

Myoko Ski Lodge in Akakura Village

Akakura Onsen, Myoko

Located in Akakura Onsen village and central to Myoko Ski Resorts, Myoko Ski Lodge in Akakura Village features beautiful views over the valley and free WiFi is provided. I’d offer an 11th star if Booking.com would let me. The Myoko Ski Lodge is perfectly located and a lovely residence, but the hosts – Geoff and Tania – are what made this a truly amazing trip for us. This was our first time skiing in Japan, and we could not have picked a better spot to stay. It’s walkable to an Akakura Onsen chairlift as well as the free shuttle stop that can take you to Akakura Kanko. The hosts helped us with transport and gear rental on our first day, allowing us to hit the slopes quickly and easily. They also helped the two non-skiers in our group set up interesting activities for the week. Our rooms were very comfortable for our family of five, breakfast was plentiful, and the onsen (natural hot springs) on the first floor were the perfect way to end a day of skiing. The town is lovely, not too big, not too small, and plenty of easy dining options. We were a tiny bit leery of the shared spaces when we booked (as we treasure our privacy), but I’m convinced this is THE way to go for a ski vacation. We made some great friends on the trip and it was so nice to hang out around the fire and share stories over a drink or two with other guests. The kids had a blast and we all enjoyed playing games in the play area/den. It truly felt like a home away from home. I thought a Japan ski trip might be a one-time experience, but I’m convinced that THIS is the way to ski – zero lines, great snow, good food, small town (non-commercialized) feel, onsens, and hosts who seemingly live to share this great experience with their guests. We will be back for sure!

Star Hotel Akakura

Akakura Onsen, Myoko

Only a 5-minute walk from Akakura Onsen Ski Resort, Star Hotel provides air conditioned rooms with Japan’s unique tatami (woven-straw) floors. Located right in the middle of Akakura Onsen the Star hotel is easy to access and then close to a number of restaurants, shops and bars. The free shuttle bus cruises past so it’s easy to jump in and get to Kanko. Onsen ski field is a 5 min walk along the street. Bar across the road and ski rental. Convenience store next door - in evenings. The family that runs Star Hotel is super kind and friendly. They’ll go out of their way to help. Breakfast was great, enough food. The Hotel is a bit tired but I think that’s par for the course around the area. Yes it’s a bit pricy but it’s the middle of peak winter season and you’re in snow paradise so …! The bathroom communal onsen is small - but easy to get to yourself. The water is soooo hot - but great for a soak. Smells great - authentic onsen water. The big family room is basic, but a traditional Japanese type stay - sleeping on futons on tatami. Plenty of extra blankets provided. Gas heaters in room are effective but you wouldn’t leave them on at night so it does cool down. Kotatsu is amazing to slip under, keep warm and rehydrate !! Discount lift tickets from reception are good but cash only. You can pay by credit card at the ski field ticket offices.
