Pousada Forte da Horta, hotel in Horta

Set in a 16th century fortress overlooking Horta Bay and Pico island, this Pousada hotel features a swimming pool and regional restaurant. Most of the air-conditioned rooms have views of the marina.

We first had a normal room, but these were really a bit small. For 50 Euro a night extra we got a suite, which is like an apartment and has a separate bedroom and a big balcony. You have a spectacular view on mount Pico and the harbour. The staff are very nice, the building is an old fort and the entire feeling is one of a Spanish Parador. To be honest, I believe this is one of the few luxury hotels on Faial (but I did not visit all the others:)). When you leave, there are plenty restaurants and bars in walking distance. The restaurant of the hotel is also very good, but the menu is very very short and did not change during our stay. We got a later check out without trouble.

A wonderful hidden island for people who like the silence, the hiking and the mountains. Beware that the supermarkets have few things. Azores are expensive to live, because of few available homes and the prices raise up.

Loved the old city...however, construction was taking place which made getting around by car a little confusing. Loved walking around the waterfront and seeing the famous marina as well as the artwork created by mariners. Shopping in the local stores was a good experience with prices that you don't feel taken advantage of. Shopping in the city's Mercado was also a nice experience. Trying new restaurants around the city was also a good experience. While there, rent a car...best way to get around as public transportation is not regular or abundant. Also, try to visit the neighboring island of Pico on the ferry and spend a few days there...lots to see.

Island more quiet than Sao Miguel, felt more centered around the sea. A good mix of sea and land. A few good walks along the shore or around a caldera or inland. Unusual landscapes. The roads are very good compared to Sao Miguel.

We have now visited Horta 13 times in eight years, and will continue to visit in coming months/years. For a small city in the middle of the North Atlantic, Horta has a very welcoming feel, and is an ideal base for people wanting to visit the central group of Azorean Islands. It's easy to walk around, and the rest of the island of Faial is accessible through day tours, e.g. with Azores Experiences who we would highly recommend. There are whale and dolphin watching trips from March - October, together with walking tours, Caldeira descent (which requires a formal guide and cannot be done alone), and a visit to the volcano and interpretation centre at Capelinhos is a must. There are a good number of excellent restaurants (Atletico, Medalhas, Genuino, Taberna do Pim, etc.) and the Oceanic bar and restaurant (their barbecue is superb) to try locally caught fish and local beef. For a good value breakfast or lunch, there are plenty of small cafes (e.g. Cafe Silva, behind Peter's Cafe) which offer great hospitality. If the weather is good and you fancy a relaxing day, there is also the beach at Porto Pim, which is used regularly by visitors and locals alike.

The best of 3 islands I have visited during this trip: San MIguel, Pico and Horta. Horta has good vibes, nature and is very alive and beautiful city and the island is pretty. I went to Capelinos volcamo museum - is is very interesting volcanology museum. I I went to big CAldeira - Cabeco Gordo - it is also very beautiful.

Nice little layd back town with astounding views of the islands Faial and Pico with their different and mystifying volcanoes, over the ever present calming ocean sights and sounds. Friendly locals serve all kinds of traditional and popular dishes and snacks, and offer quality lodging depending on your wishes and wallet. With a rental car, taxi or public transport it's easy to visit interesting geological, natural and cultural locations spread around the island. There is a lot of time and space there to come to yourself or interact with the local community.

The hotel is a resort composed of a main building and small buildings. We stayed in the main building, our room was good, with a small balcony. The location is perfect, it is on a small hill right on top of Horta main street, you can easily walk down and in 2 minutes you are on the main street. The swimming pool and the restaurant have an amazing view over Pico island and the volcano. We had dinner in the restaurant with that view, but also the food was really good. Definitely recommended to have dinner there.

We had room nr 5 at the front of the building. As H18 is a little up the hill, we had gorgeous views of Horta and the ocean and the island opposite Pico and its majestic mountain. H18 is modern and fresh. Our room was spacious and bright and very quiet at night, with a tiny terrace with sea views. Bed was good and shower strong. Breakfast was nice in the morning, with good nespresso coffee and a selection of bread, cheese and ham, marmelade and yoghurt. Parking is easy in front of the building.

I cook. I cook tasty (It is not just my opinion:). Usually I do not like hotel meal. I am a little evil snob when I speak about meals. But... Steaks, burgers, sandwiches, salads - absolutely all I ate was great. Yes there is more snacks than meals but it is tasty. Big confortable apartments, amazing ocean view, superb Owner (with the capital letter), a lot of scenic views near, about 20 min to Horta on foot. It is very local place. Islanders love it, and I can see why.

The house is located on a hill and has a beautiful small garden, overlooking the city of Horta and the ocean. It is big and spacious, has all the amenities one might need for a pleasant stay and gives a home feeling. The host Marco was very nice and helpful and helped us even with small inconveniences. I definitely recommend the Family house to anyone who would like to feel the hospitality and comfort of staying in an island in the Atlantic Ocean.

The place is very charming, like an old fashioned home, very warm and inviting. Only 8 rental rooms. Quiet with a huge garden and pool ( which we didnt use). Good breakfast, not too fancy but enough to start the day. Beds were excellent, although they only had 2 twin beds for us and not a double bed. There was no check in time, they asked us about our time of arrival and we got the room when we arrived, at about 10:30 in the morning...

The best place I stayed on my trip to Azores! The building is beautifully restored and maintained, hosts are so helpful, shared kitchen was clean, stocked, and organized, and location great for exploring the city. They are also conscious of the environment and offer easy composting of the food scraps and excellent coffee without wasting plastic. You will love staying here.

After having stayed at the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel, it was a bit of a shock to find out Hotel Do Canal was owned by the same company. It looked and felt so different. Staff never really smiled or made eye contact. The uniform looked very casual borderline unprofessional. The breakfast was not great either. The room and view was fine.
