The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Best of all - they were there 24 hours! It’s so nice to have this very real and important service, especially in the days of Airbnb, where there is no one on site to welcome you and to help throughout one’s stay! I much prefer a REAL hotel!

Haarlem is beautiful in it's own right with lots of historic buildings, and charming streets which have been greened with tree, shrub and flower planting. There is the Frans Hals museum to visit, and much more. Take a walking tour of "Monumental Haarlem"
Haarlem is also very conveniently situated for Amsterdam and surrounding areas. We used public transport all the time. Just swipe on and off the bus or train, and everything is taken care of. Really simple, and it all works smoothly.
We also found some really good restaurants for our evening meals.

Haarlem is a wonderful city to stay in as it has the canals, lots of history, good shopping and plentiful restaurants.
The Grotemarkt has the oldest organ in Europe which Mozart played on and Corrie Ten Boom’s house(who hid the Jews in WW2) is better than Anne Franks! The very first museum in the Netherlands is also here-Teylers. The Saturday market is wonderful.
It is only 15 minutes by train back into Amsterdam and you have a better feel of regular Dutch folks in this beautiful town.

First, I really liked Amsterdam.
First, I really liked Amsterdam. But it was really really crowded, even the first week of April. Then, when I got to Haarlem, I realized it was similar to Amsterdam, with all the old world Europe charm, old buildings, & canals, but not the hordes of crazy tourists. I ended up liking Haarlem better than Amsterdam! Even better than Rotterdam, and maybe the Haag (except I only spent a few hours there). Easy to walk everywhere, and I rented a bicycle and rode all the way to the beach and back on easy, nice separated bike paths. Also, the bike riders are not as aggressive as in Amsterdam. So as an American tourist, in my 50s, I felt perfectly comfortable riding my bike all over. Of course, you still need to be hyper aware of oncoming cyclists and cars… also, they had a secure bike garage near the main central Plaza, where you could lock your bike for free, with a guard watching over it. If you left it overnight, you had to pay something. So I was able to lock my eBay inside there while visiting main attractions in the plaza, like the church with the pipe organ.
I will definitely choose this as a base next time, instead of Amsterdam. I considered staying in Leiden too, but never got a chance to go there.

Haarlem is a beautiful safe city with plenty of lovely restaurants and bars. Walking is the best way to get around the city . I would recommend hiring bikes and cycling out to Zaandvort which is completely along a cycle path to a stunning beach. There are plenty of museums and the windmill is worth a visit . There is also a food market in the square on Saturday morning

Haarlem in my opinion is a better place to stay than Amsterdam. It is a more friendly setting. Amsterdam is easy to get to by train and see all the sites. I have been to the Netherlands several times and stayed in Amsterdam and other cities but prefer Haarlem.
In the spring, Haarlem is close to the tulips which are a must see.
It has its own unique tourist attractions.
Staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable.
Nice breakfast. Early check-in as room was ready early.
2nd visit to this hotel and will definitely return.
Some reviews state how small the bathrooms are. They are small. However, they are clean, modern, and equipped with everything you need. No issues with it at all.
Great location.
10 - 15 mins walk from train station.
Great service to Amsterdam, however, personal opinion, but we much prefer Haarlem. Fantastic place to visit.
We will return in the summer to visit the nearby beaches.
what an absolutely gorgeous apartment and what a find!! Monique was the best host, welcoming us personally and offering any help we needed but not intrusive. After visiting Amsterdam for many years and day trips to Haarlem I think we’ve found our place for the next few years … Haarlem has a different pace to Amsterdam and we love it! to wake up each morning to the most amazing view of the windmill was wonderful! the terrace at the back of the property had sunshine all afternoon and evening.
Location is good, 25 minutes by car to Amsterdam, or 8 minutes walk to the train station, however, tickets machine was not available at the station, so need to buy in app.
Hotel is very clean, friendly staff. There is paid parking near by the hotel, however, there is also plenty of free parking places in the neighbourhood just near the hotel.
Breakfast is good, good coffee. All was really good and I would recommend this hotel.
Breakfast and Dinner were good, I sent emails to upgrade the room for my “Dutch” partners Special Birthday we have stayed in lots of Van Der Valk Hotels, they emailed back with a price and I accepted but when we got there we had the normal room with no upgrade, it was busy so I didn’t bother to go to reception and ask what had happened, disappointed with the room, Van Der Valk Viannen still tops the list sorry
I have stayed at this hotel two or three times per year for the last five years when visiting family in Haarlem. It is with sadness that I have noted the decline, especially in the basic quality of front-of-house staff and housekeeping. This stay will be my last, which is a sadness to me as the hotel has the potential to be excellent. At the moment, standards are nowhere near good enough for the price.
Great location, easy walk to everything. lovely views of the canal. The aircon was great on the top floor as it was a very hot place. Good communication from host. We were able to check in early and could have left our bags there after check out if needed.
Haarlem is gorgeous and in our opinion , as a couple in our early sixties, more beautiful and quiet than Amsterdam.
The hotel is located in a extremely convenient location. I arrived earlier than expected and would be desperate to check in a bit earlier. The staff is very nice to offer me the room right away and I could get a bit rest before enjoying the days at Amsterdam. They also offered recommendation and map and everything you need without ask.
Comfortable clean and quiet. It was a perfect location, given that Amsterdam was overrun for the tulip festival. Haarlem is a beautiful city with plenty of interesting things to do and great dining - The Niu Dairy was close to all of them, and a short walk to the train station for a quick ride to Amsterdam. Good breakfast.
The location is right in the middle of the city. Haarlem is so fun, lively, youthful and the hotel is located in a bike/pedestrian area so there is no traffic noise. Vert good breakfast, lively restaurant right outside the doors. Kind of funky layout with different stairs and levels, but everything works well.
LOVED this place! I stayed in Amsterdam for the other 2 nights and I regretted moving. I was happy to pay a little extra for this hostel. There wasn't a buzz of the big city just the joy of peacefulness in the interiors and the smiles of the staff. This is a good bridge between mid-range quality on a budget.
Centrally located MAF is well suited to explore Haarlem on foot. We disovered a lot of nice dining places (Miyagi & Jones, Piek, Anne & Max). This is our first time in Netherlands and people are very friendly. Everything gets done in such a calm and without pressure. We love it and will surely be back.
What a great place to stay. Henk and Anne Marie were fabulous hosts and made us feel really welcome. The location is perfect for exploring lovely Haarlem but also very easy if you wish to go into Amsterdam. The room was a great size and very clean, the breakfasts were great. We will definitely be back!
Location was excellent - easy to get around Haarlem by bike or bus or on foot. Amsterdam very easy to get to by train or bus. The place itself was clean, comfortable and of such a high standard. The owners were incredibly helpful and provided a well-stocked fridge as part of the service.
The location was perfect to explore the City of Haarlem and was also great for returning to the Amsterdam Airport….hopped the bus across the street and it dropped us off right at the airport.
Esther, our host, was very accommodating! Thank you!
Spacious room and bathroom with separate shower and tub; location to center; amazing light blocking drapes. Decor of staircase and dome in lobby a treat to see. Great to come back to relative tranquility after visiting Amsterdam or Hague.
We loved that this hotel was in the center of Haarlem. It was close enough to the train station to be able to walk, and close to shops and restaurants. The room was comfortable and clean, and having a mini-fridge was a bonus!
The location was excellent and the facilities were all as listed. Good value for money and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this hotel for visitors to Haarlem and Amsterdam. Will be back again.
very nice hostel first time for us older folks trying this experience out nice that supper and adult beverages were available after a long day of touring Amsterdam! friendly folks working there
