Sardinia in a Nutshell
The Sardinian capital, Cagliari has a historic old town, busy port and one of the island’s best beaches. The sweeping stretch of sand at Poetto has great summer nightlife, and just inland is Molentargius lagoon, where flamingos nest against the backdrop of the city.
Cagliari is spread over a small hill and the oldest part – Quartiere Castello – lies at the top. There are far-reaching views from Bastion San Remy, its main entrance point. Medieval city walls lead from here to the simple cathedral, and nearby is the 18th-century Palazzo Regio.
By one of the original city gates is the National Archaeological Museum, housing a collection of Phoenician and Roman artifacts from the city’s Tuvixeddu Necropolis. There are also displays of the nuraghic civilization whose former dwellings pepper Sardinia. The most impressive is Su Nuraxi north of Cagliari.
Just outside the walls are remains of a Roman amphitheater, next to the university botanical gardens. Orange tree-lined streets descend the hill towards the seafront where restaurants and bars can be found. Cagliari FC play at Sant’Elia Stadium along the coast and opposite is the Sardinia International Fair, an important conference venue.

I liked the antiquity and history. We also visited the Museum of Archeology, a definite must. The sights in Cagliari, the narrow streets and the little train that one can ride for a minimal fee. Weather was not nice, so we cannot really use the beaches or go the mountain (to much windy), but center and close surroundings of Cagliari are nice, wonderful views, walking in small streets. We recommend to take bus Nr.7, which is circular line. How the driver is driving thru small streets - respect. In any case is better for stay in the city to use buses - it'smore practical and ecological, cheap and good service, parking is anyway difficult.

The Botanical Gardens were fantastic - well worth the visit. The public civic gardens were lovely and so well maintained by the hard working crew. Also the art gallery at the end of it was small but beautiful.

A truly Mediterranean city, warm and full of life and positive vibes. It's history and culture deserve much more respect than it actually receives. Some spots are neglected (particularly Bastione San Remi), the roads are not in the best shape and overall there is a sense of neglect. Luckily the locals with their helpful attitude make up for the minuses which most probably are created by the local authorities.

The location is a 5 minute walk from the train station which makes it easy to get to when flying into Cagliari. Loredana was the sweetest woman and the perfect host with her fast communication and answering any questions we had. There is also a bus stop at the bottom of the street which makes it easy to head to Poetto beach. We would recommend Sardinia Gem House to anyone who was wanting to visit Cagliari.

The Train station was adjacent to the hotel which made for an easy departure. We were greeted on arrival by GABBY, he was most welcoming given our late arrival. Superb kitchen/Diner area with all the Facilities and the Bedroom was equally excellent. We stayed at 4 Hotels during a 15 day tour of Sicily and Sardinia and in terms of value for money..easily the WINNER!

Visitors without a car should be aware that the hotel is quite a way from downtown but is easily accessed by bus. I don't know if its possible but I would recommend trying to buy bus tickets at the airport if you are arriving during the afternoon as nothing is open locally to buy them.
