From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

We stayed to visit our daughter and partner while they are at Uni in Plymouth. We stayed with our dog Lara. Property was few step down to accommodation (we have seen worse) good area to dry Lara before letting her in to lounge /dinner through to bed room to the right bathroom to the left into kitchen This is a great location 2 min to Hoe, 10 min at most to Barbican. The host are amazing, really accommodating after a long journey. The welcome pack is so welcome just to get a tea or coffee and milk, every thing was there, including shower gel, shampoo, conditioner hand wash, washing up liquid to name but a few treats . Quite a few places could take note. If cleaning product available most people will help to keep it clean.
We would defiantly stay there again. Thank you so much

The Hoe and Barbican areas are lovely and definitely worth visiting. The Barbican area is great for eating out and a stroll along the Hoe is a must. The Royal William Yard is also a pleasant and interesting place to visit.
The modern city centre is quite tatty and run down so worth avoiding.

Some great gems in and around the Barbican.
Some great gems in and around the Barbican.
It is a city under scaffolding and behind hoardings. Hopefully it will reinvent itself soon, but in the meantime walking can dull (if not threatening).
It has a long drawn-out centre, For example, 25 minute walk or a Taxi from the Barbican to / from the station at £7.50

Had a lovely stay in Plymouth, fortunately for me the weather was very kind in January, will return as there was so much to see and do that I couldn't fit it all in on my initial visit!Would highly recommend the Plymouth Hoe and Barbican areas, visited some great pubs, will visit many more next time!
The location was fantastic right on Plymouth Hoe and close to everything needed (pub, shops, city centre). The hosts, Pete and Andy, were brilliant. They communicated well before, during and after our stay and were very helpful with parking, which was really convenient. The apartment is clean and lovely with nice towels and comfy beds. Also great for dog owners due to a secure garden which was perfect. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a stay in Plymouth
Staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. Always happy to help with any issues or questions. Comfortable bed and great view from both the room and restaurant.
Breakfast was good, with a wide specialist selection alongside the standard full English. Reception staff are knowledgeable about both the hotel and the area.
The location was great for reaching the harbour and other city center points of interest. Definitely the best choice for a hotel in central Plymouth.
Very nice family run hotel, modern and classical decor. I found them very helpful and informative,
Situated in a very historical part of plymouth central, the views of the sea and harbour at the end of the road was simply breathtaking.
Home of the Mayflower pilgrims, Francis Drake, Charles Kingsleys famous book 'Westward Ho" was written in Hoe, which is the name of the town that the hotel is situated.
.
Beautiful gardens and scenery…very quiet, a perfect location to immerse in nature and explore Darmoor and Devon. the hosts are so friendly, trying to make everything perfect.. They gave excellent suggestions about the interesting sights around. Excellent for walks to the river the dam and the countrside. We used this as base to explore Plymouth, Looe, Penzance, Landes End, St Ives and Newquay.
This hotel is located next to the hoe and a short walk to the town centre .Staff are friendly and approachable my room was clean and tidy and the shower was excellent. Breakfast was tasty and plentiful. I would definitely recommend this lovely hotel and if I visit plymouth again I will want to stay here again.
Easy to reach hotel in the city center with all facilities like lift etc. and very friendly staff at reception and throughout the hotel.
Very comfortable bed and clean room/bath-room and very tailored English breakfast as made fresh on demand with nice buffet of fruits, dairy products and sweet options.
Staff were superb, the hotel had changed hands and all the staff were clearly the right people to make it succeed !
Parking was a massive bonus, and was free, any street parking in the area is restricted or has charges and restricted hours.
Position was really good for all Plymouth's best things
James and Marie are very nice and friendly, the room is lovely, clean and confortable. Very delicious breakfast were served every morning, with various options. Good location, just 6 min walk to the Weast Hoe Park. I will definitely choose this hotel again if go to plymouth next time.
We had a lovely stay - fantastic staff and more than helpful - you feel so relaxed and at home there. Great to see familiar faces. The rooms are comfortable, the entire building warm and cosy and it’s a great area of Plymouth to be based in. Highly recommended!!
three minutes walk from the railway station and next to the large Sainsburys, and straight road down to Plymouth Hoe.
The breakfast was totally self service so there was no time pressure waiting time for the bacon to fry!
A classic gem. Historic hotel that didn’t try to renovate away all the old style charm. Comfortable, clean, friendly staff. Would definitely stay again & recommended to friends.
The breakfast was very good, very well cooked, and was probably the best breakfast I have had in a Plymouth hotel. Everything else about the place was exceptionally poor.
Location near to Plymouth Hoe. Barbican area with plenty of independent shops and plenty of eating places.
Historical area. Historical hotel, staff friendly and helpful.
value for money hotel was great would stay there again. close to the city center and all amenities, lot of choices on where to eat in the area as well.
