This was such a cool quirky place to stay. Had a great view from the balcony. Great to have a washing machine. Contact with the host was good. Stayed here with our daughter - bedrooms were small so had our suitcases in the 'lounge'.
Monsanto is definitely worth the visit, one night is enough to see it all but if you have time and want to chill out take an extra night.
The Casa Pires Mateus is located in the Historic Village of Monsanto. It is a typical house recently rebuilt keeping the traditional style of the village with its exterior granite walls.

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk trip to Portugal. You can start to see the massive boulders from the base of the hillside and then it's 5 km straight up winding narrow road. You will need your host to show you where to park.

It is a good idea to book a place for the night.
It is a good idea to book a place for the night. The views are so incredible and unique you will want to experience day and night in amongst the boulders. There is a wonderful hike to the ruins above the boulder village. There is spectacular lighting in the evening. The village is quite out of the way for travelling. This was our second visit to Monsanto so we knew to book for the night. Lots of unique places to eat. We ate at our hosts' spot and it was great. Once you arrive amongst the boulders, you don't have to leave until your stay is over. You can find all you need there.

Very unique.
Very unique. Great trekking up to the fort (short but steep). We really enjoyed the “rock village”. Our meal at Pestitos and Granitos was delicious. We recommend Monsanto fro those looking for a unique experience.

It's a very peaceful place with lots of great views and we found a lovely bistro to eat at. Some of the roads are very steep and you have to park and walk so for someone not so good on their feet this wouldn't be suitable

Worth a visit.
Worth a visit. We drove too far and Nuno and another guy helped direct my husband doing an 8 point turn. Huge cobbles and steep hills are the order of the day, but it is fascinating and the views of an evening are enchanting. Nuno's house is lovely and we would stay there again. Thank you Nuno for your help!
The hosts João and Helena! They did everything in their power to make our stay memorable. The room was comfortable and equipped with all necessities. The hotel is located at almost the highest point of the village. This makes the further hike up to the castle that much “easier”.
Helena tried to make dinner reservations for us in the village but the lone restaurant in Monsanto was fully booked. Helena volunteered to make lasagna for us.
Next morning we had a really great breakfast (included). It kept us full all the way through dinner
This was a true find. Although at the foot of the hill from Monsanto, there was a pathway (the old Roman Road) to walk through cork trees up to town. Restaurant choices were limited in town, so we brought charcuterie with us. The proprietor supplied plates, cutting board, wine glasses and we had a lovely dinner and sunset on the terrace with the dogs and cats living on the terrace. We had a wonderful breakfast of fruits from the property eith breads and homemade jam. Yum. We felt at home and well taken care of.
Helena's place Old House is simply amazing. It is like staying in a museum - a traditional stone house full of traditional objects and social history and perched on the edge of Monsanto with amazing views of the valley below. Helena was so kind and helpful, serving us an incredible breakfast everyday, booking a restaurant for us, giving us tips for local walks and exploring Monsanto. Monsanto itself is also an amazing place. Not to be missed and this is the perfect house to stay in to get a feel for the town.
Monsanto is very special and Sun Set is the place to stay when visiting. Arrival and check in was clearly explained and Eloiza was very helpful and accommodating. The house was charming, comfortable, well equipped and spotless. Eloiza made sure all of our needs were met including a lunch after a long hike and help with dinner reservations. You couldn't ask for a better host. Monsanto is a unique experience and a must see if you enjoy traveling off the beaten path. Sun Set is the place to stay.
This renovated stone structure into a beautifully appointed 8 room boutique hotel was perfection! Such a relaxing setting looking out to a gorgeous infinity pool with olive trees and unobstructed landscape for miles. Stefano and Katarina were lovely host. They went out of there way to make our stay one of the best stays of 9 location. We didn't make reservations one night and texted them out on the road and they found us a lovely restaurant in the next town over. You will not be disappointed!!
Such an authentic place! The hotel has a fully equipped kitchen and cozy dinner room with vintage furniture. I love this kind of places, but maybe for someone it would look like outdated hotel. But I loved it!
The host (Anna Paula) is English speaking, she was incredibly sweet and professional, as I understood she takes care of everything on site: check-in/check-out, cleaning, breakfasts etc. And yes, the breakfast was included and it was served like if we were at restaurant.
Great experience!
so about highest room with the balcony:
- i can't imagine there is better place to stay in Monsanto
- this is like a highest place in the village (excluding castle) and you got the view for all the are place and the fields around
- and you got to eat breakfast on the balcony looking at all of this - it's truly amazing!
- other rooms are nice, but of course not as exceptional
- also - Monsanto is the best place in Portugal :)
The listing states ‘continental breakfast’ but this breakfast was so much more than that! It greatly exceeded our expectations. It included homemade omelets from the hosts, a cheese & meat board, yogurt & granola, coffee/tea with milk. The hosts are incredibly hospitable, helpful with arrival, providing recommendations, and general friendliness. I cannot recommend this place enough! Our best stay in Portugal.
An absolute pleasure to stay here with super kind and relaxed hosts. Monsanto was our favourite town in Portugal and our wonderful and thoughtfully designed accommodation and kind hosts added enormously to our experience. The charming terrace was a wonderful place for breakfast or a drink. The sister restaurant also had a glorious terrace and excellent food. Highly recommended! Can't wait to return!
The other review say it all really but if you are looking for a place from which to explore Monsanto then you need not look any further. From the assistance with the baggage to the prompt communication, from the incredible food to the incredibly warm hospitality, from the small and big gestures of the host to the location of the property - this place has it all!
The owner and the local host are very friendly and helpful. The location is wonderfull and helps you to calm down and relax. The room is very tastefully decorated, the garden a joy and the breakfast at its best. Nice walk up the hill to the fantastic village of Monsanto.
Location, large rooms and clean. Plenty of hot water. Electrical plug next to bed. Did not give s 10 because elevator was broken when we arrive. But on check in stag hand carry luggage to 2 nd floor. I have lumbar spinal stenosis. And in Monsanto there is a lot climbing
The studio is very beautiful, comfy, stylish and perfifor a romantic getaway. The street of the house is silent and seemed to be away from the main tourist routes of the village. You feel part of the environment there, which is a unique experience in Monsanto.
Great location within the Monsanto village, lovely house with authentic furniture and beautiful views from the room. The bed was comfy and everything was clean. We could also take our dog with us as the place is pets friendly.
