Bamberg is the epitome of everything Bavarian: half-timbered houses, medieval splendour and heavenly views. Due to its overwhelming beauty, it’s almost surreal to wander its cobbled streets and drink it all in.
Speaking of which, Bamberg has a surprising number of breweries and inns serving its signature Rauchbier. Most are dotted around the UNESCO World Heritage-listed, pedestrianised historic centre - once at the heart of the Holy Roman Empire. Emperor Henry II ordered construction of the 11th-century cathedral and is buried inside.
His empire’s prince-bishops had it good, and their former seats are scattered over the city. Their Old Palace courtyard has wooden balconies adorned with bright flowers. The New Residence is even grander, with opulent halls reflecting the rulers’ wealth. Michaelsberg Abbey – the bishops’ private monastery - is on one of Bamberg’s 7 hills, and on the highest is Altenburg Castle, another ruler’s abode.
The modern seat of power – the town hall – is the most incredible building of all. Spanning 2 bridges over the Regnitz River, it partly hangs above the fast-flowing water and is overlooked by the colourful Little Venice fishermen’s houses.
Booking.com’s Bamberg accommodation is as eclectic as the bishops’ residences, ranging from old town hotels to cheap apartments and guest houses near Maxplatz, home of the main Christmas market.
Bamberg is a nice compact town which can easily be walked...
Bamberg is a nice compact town which can easily be walked and all the people of Bamberg we encountered were friendly. It had been beautifully kept and so many interesting places to visit or just simply wander about the town and admire the town as a whole. We had an amazing lunch at Hotel Brudermühl just by chancing across it as we walked the town and the Glühwein was pretty good too.
Currently (Dec 2023) there is a lot of restoration and building works so a number of locations are not open or are partially open for visitors but there is still plenty to see and do. Domplatz with the Bamberg Cathedral and New Residence are definitely worth visiting - make sure you go into the rose garden for the view across Bamberg.
In warmer weather a walk up to St Michael’s should be done.
Best thing to do in Bamberg is to walk and just Criss-cross the streets and bridges so you can see the amazing Altes Rathaus in the middle of the river from all angles as well as all the wonderful little finds on your walk. Bamberg is also a little shopping-mecca so remember to put aside some euros to spend here.
Definitely allow 3 days for Bamberg if you want to see everything.

Bamberg was a great stop in between Berlin and Munich.
Bamberg was a great stop in between Berlin and Munich. The small-town vibes are great and the city is beautiful. There is a lot of shopping and food. The boat ride was enjoyable. This town is a perfect mix of enough to do, but smaller and easier to navigate than a big city.
We didn't particularly care for their 'Rauchbier' (smoked beer) although many like it. We had great street food (doener and bakery). There is also a good mix of bigger stores and cute small shops (Christmas stores, bookshops).

One of the most beautiful towns I have visited in Germany. Maybe not the most excited when it comes to nightlife but if you are looking for a fantastic location, old beautiful building, great food and beer in a very peaceful environment with your friends or family, Bamberg is the place.

So much to see and do in such a relatively small space.
So much to see and do in such a relatively small space. So many little quaint corners to discover. So much history, so many good views. The people of Bamberg are really friendly and a wonderful laid-back atmosphere prevails, it's like all the visitors are happy. Sounds crazy but the air there is so fresh and clean in comparison to the Rhine-Main area where I live. The riverside has interesting cafes, bars, restos. The parks are lovely, the bus travel easy. I would avoid the RED BUS hop-on hop-off next time round. It's a bit of a rip-off. The Bamberg 3day ticket is a worthwhile investment.

In our mission to travel around Germany, Bamberg did not dissapointed. It was exceptionally beautiful. Me and my husband were not expecting for this city to be as beautiful as it is. It has a lot of culture, delicious food and beer. Also the people in restaurants were really friendly!
I would definitely recommend for people to visit Bamber, but consider that is a VERY touristy place, so arrange your trip with time.
Once there you will be able to walk to most locations
Breakfast was outstanding! Totally worth the 12euro. Breakfast staff was also very nice and welcoming. Check in was easy. Everyone we encountered was very courteous. This location is a bit of a walk to center all want to visit. But that said, it’s a nice walk with shops and lots to see along the way. If you are in Bamberg because of the beer, you will find a great place across the street to get some local beer to take home. We found that to be a real plus.
The Altstadthotel Messerschmitt hotel was absolutely excellent. The staff was exceptional-very friendly and extremely helpful. They went above and beyond to assist us with times for our train for the next day. The property was welcoming, clean, and spacious. Our hotel room was extremely clean and pretty large for European standards.
The hotel was very affordable especially considering it was a weekend night and that it is located in a great area.
My comfortable, spacious, quiet room had all the expected features of 3-star accommodation. But the hotel’s peaceful location makes it special: the Kongress sits beside the river, a very pleasant, ten-minute walk (along a tree-lined walkway) from the central area of Bamberg’s old city — quite convenient, as it turned out. It was nice to return here from the sometimes crowded streets downtown. On a Saturday night this was a welcome retreat.
Breakfast was just ok, same thing every day. Not a buffet, just a set plate. But more than adequate. The lady in charge was entertaining with her personal musical accompaniment at breakfast. I had one evening meal in the hotel restaurant, and it was excellent. The hotel is strangely decorated and filled with bizarre ornaments, but very homely. its a way out of Bamberg but nice and quiet and on a good bus route.
Due to my work, I am traveling a lot. Mostly I stay in hotel chains (mostly Hilton). During my last trip somehow all hotels were fully booked, so that I ended up in this Hotel. The quality that I got was definitely the same level and even more that the branded chains. The location was definitely amazing and also the room, the cleanness. Everything. Great value for your money. I will stay here more often.
This was my favorite hotel so far in Germany. It was so well situated to see all the most amazing sites, so much attention was paid to details like interesting lamps and lighting, snacks were provided free of charge, bottles if water, coffee machine that made delicious coffee and herbal tea. The room was spacious and clean and quiet. Will definitely go back when in Bamberg.
Located a few steps from main sights of historical centre of Bamberg, this cosy hotel offers all you need for a pleasant stay in the city. The room was quiet, wide and clean, with very comfortable beds.
The breakfast was varied and good.
Also there are a public parking very close of the hotel.
After another accommodation place let us down we needed a last minute hotel in Bamberg. Ibis Styles was available at an okay rate considering it was a last minute (6pm) booking on a festival weekend.
I was also able to print some documents at no cost through the reception desk.
The hotel was really central and convenient. Loved the quirky, arty decor and thoroughly enjoyed three excellent breakfasts. The staff were really pleasant and attentive - we couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay In Bamberg! Thank you 😀😀
The service was friendly, the breakfast was abundant, full of many homemade and tasty food. the hotel is located in the city centre, next to a scenic bridge.
Additionally, the room was very clean.
I loved having a room with A/C its not common in Germany. The location was great it was in the heart of Bamberg. Staff were helpful with the bike parking.
