The hosts are very welcoming and happy to help with information on the local area. The location is beautiful and perfect for a peaceful getaway, ideally located for Hadrian's Wall, Corbridge, Hexham and many more local attractions.
The room was clean and well thought out and the bed was very comfy.
Breakfast was spot on

Really peaceful and private. A lovely location - the cabin was very Impressive. Took the dogs for a short break... my oldest dog has mobility issues and the cabin was perfect for accessibility for her.

The welcome at Matfen was lovely, being seated in the great hall while your car is parked by concierge and bags taken to the room is a great touch. Our room was spacious enough and we had a lovely little balcony with views to Matfen village which is 2 minutes away. The rooms were spotlessly clean and great amenities including fresh milk, the decor of our room is a little tired but it didn't detract from our stay. I also had a fantastic facial in the spa and we used the pool, sauna and steam room which were very good. Then to Emerald restaurant which was incredible such a wonderful surrounding to enjoy delicious food and a great bottle of South African Pinotage. We definitely recommend a stay here and we loved it so much we have already booked again to stay in December with our parents. See you again in a couple of months. Possibly our new favourite getaway hotel.

Sits in a very scenic location near the village of Matfen but also near Newcastle and Hexham. A very impressive looking hotel and inside did not disappoint. There has a lot of character. Food was good and staff excellent. Perfect hotel to have a relaxing break and plenty around if you want to see things eg Hadrians Wall or Corrbridge. It also has a lovely spar but best to book treatments in advance. We will definitely be going back.
Great breakfast and choice on the menu, staff very friendly.
Food at dinner in the Cloisters restaurant was delicious, we ate there 2 nights
Room was lovely although not sure what was happening with the heating as it was on when we were in the room and when we finally managed to turn it off we still had to take the winter duvet out of the cover and just sleep with the sheet, very hot!
The staff around the hotel were exceptional and very friendly.
Our greeting by Desmond who went out of his way to be welcoming was a huge improvement to our previous visit some years ago.. our room 33 was a delight, diner was excellent and a freshly cooked breakfast ( Matfen ) was simply the best.!! how could a pre-cooked buffet breakfast ever be as good ??? was tempted by the EggyBread too .. will certainly stay here again in preference to The Angel in Corbridge or Slaley Hall . Well done to the Matfen Team
The chap who welcomed us and took our bags was lovely, didn’t expect to be greeted with a welcome drink either which was nice. The staff took their time to familiarise us with the layout of the hotel and where to find all the amenities.
Restaurant was great, food was brilliant, spa area was spot on.
The whole experience was exceptional. From the minute we walked in the staff were tentative and welcoming.
The food was amazing and the spa treatments were beautiful. Can’t fault Matfen Hall. We will be returning very soon.
We were speachless. Beautiful hotel, great facilities, the staff was amazing, the food was the best we ever had, and the room was luxurious. We will definitely come back!
The hot breakfast choices were excellent. Service was excellent throughout the hotel.
The public rooms were very comfortable and beautifully furnished.
