I sailed as a sea captain all around the island, including Pemba island. I spent here almost 2 months altogether. From tourist places, I liked Nungwi beaches. You have to know, most of tourist resorts are situated outside of local civilization. If you want to go shopping or to the local restaurant, you need to order a taxi everytime and the prices are high. The food and alcohol is quite expensive even for europeans. The locals are kind, although sometimes annoying if they are selling something. I felt absolutely safe, more than in EU. Traffic in the inlands is terrible, try to avoid travelling on these roads. Negotiate the price (taxi etc) before drive. They are able to ask 50 USD for 3 kilometres of ride after. If I could decide, I would try another exotic islands. Zanzibar needs 5-10 years to improve the services for tourist, infrastructure etc.

Navigating Zanzibar City was surprisingly easy, with an array of transportation options available. The compact size of the city made it convenient to explore on foot, with many attractions within walking distance of each other. I would definitely suggest trying the local Swahili food for fresh fish and seafood.
For a visitor from South Africa, I found the price of food and drinks at restaurants relatively expensive.

Paradise Found: Zanzibar's Enchanting Beauty
Paradise Found: Zanzibar's Enchanting Beauty
Zanzibar is simply one of the best places on Earth. Its beaches are nothing short of breathtaking, with pristine sands so fine they feel like silk beneath your toes. The tranquil waters, gentle and calm, create a mesmerizing backdrop that captivates the soul. My love for this place knows no bounds; it's a sanctuary of unparalleled beauty and serenity.

It was lovely and we got to see the history of the slave trade (albeit sadly as it was a horrendous practice). The beaches are also very beautiful (Jambiani Beach was where we mostly went.) The spice farm tour and markets were lovely as we got all kinds of fresh spices.
However, it is very tourist-centric. Payment is in dollars everywhere and people are always trying to sell you something. Feels very commercialised.

Dirty, smelly, full of approaching ~beach boys, sellers and beggars. Much more aggressive than up north. Mostly came for a Nakupenda tour. Nice place but be aware that it’s crowded - by lots of tourists and then of course even the aggressive up in your face wanting to touch you sellers there too.
The more upscaled beach hotels and restaurants are nice though.
One of our most pleasant surprises in Zanzibar. We fell in love with every corner of the hotel. First - GREAT value for your money. This is not a fancy spot, but it is packed with personality.
The building which the hotel resides is old and historic, but extremely well kept and clean. Amazing staff and perfect location in Stone Town - walking distance from several restaurants and shopping spots. The hotel is full of little details and jokes that I highly recommend that you pay attention to. So happy with our stay.
Forodhani is my second home in Stone Town. Competitive rates, big spacious rooms, and a nice basic breakfast to get you going. The hotel is in the best location. Across the road from Forodhani Park which is the central attraction in Stone Town for its famous night food markets. Also close to the beach. The hotel is a walking distance from the Ferry terminal. A great swimming pool on the rooftop. The staff is always great, welcoming, and considerate.
The location is amazing, right on the beach, so great for people-watching. The hotel is big, but not too big so it feels very cozy! The staff were incredibly nice, everyone from the concierge to the room service, to the guards, to the waiters - everyone!
The pool is lovely, but my absolute favorite was the 200-year-old mango tree. If you don't stay here, at least come for drinks and a look at this beautiful tree!
Look no further in Stone Town, Spice Palace is the best, Perfect choice, everything was super fine, easily accessible from either ferry or airport. The hotel is located few meters from Forodhani Park.
Great and highly skilled staff, great breakfast at the Hotel with varieties of flesh to baked stuffs you can choose from.
I highly recommend this hotel while in Zanzibar city, THE BEST IN STONE TOWN
Every aspect of this property is an absolute delight. The location is within very easy access to the ferry terminal, to a multitude of sightseeing, restaurants, shops, beach access, walking areas. The hotel restaurant is right in the pool and garden grounds area. It's a quiet, cool oasis within the city. Restoration of this historic property is impeccable.
The location is excelent, in front of the see and close to historical area and markets/shops.
The staff is very friendly.
There is a nice roof top to see the sunset.
Although the beach in front of the hotel is not very good to swim the hotel has a nice pool.
The tour in Stone Town and Prison Island/Nakupenda that the hotel organized were very good.
really excellent location right on ‘jaws corner’ but still spacious enough rooms and private bathroom - valuable commodity for this price range in stone town! staff were friendly and housekeeping staff were particularly accommodating and did a great job. the hotel has a rooftop bar which has well priced food and drink as well as a good breakfast.
Beautiful hotel in Stone Town, perfectly located to visit the city center walking and to take a boat to Prison Island. The room was comfortable and clean with hot shower. Breakfast is also very nice and served on a beautiful terrace. The owner and the staff were so nice and friendly, really supportive. We would definitely come back!
The location and the staff are great. I spent there the first three nights when I was in stone town, at the end of my trip, I went back to spend the last night there as well because it was great for me. It's nearby from Stonetown's beach, the port to main land, prison island and Forodhani park. The staff was helpful and nice.
the 2 ladies at the front were so nice and let us keep are baggage there until the ferry left at 4pm. also the breakfast was one of the best breakfast in Zanzibar
the cleaning ladies are great and they gave us towels after we came back from the beach. I should have stayed here the whole time while in stone town
Hotel situated in a historic building in Stone Town, close to all major attractions within walking distance. The room we stayed in was very spacious and decorated with antique furniture that gave it a special touch. The pool area is very nice and the terrace has a great view of the city.
Hotel Tembo is great, right on the beach with two pools. We stayed in the associated B&B, a short walk away once you know the route. We were on the top floor in a large studio where we were very comfortable.
We had access to the hotel facilities including breakfast with a view.
The Maru Maru Hotel is centrally located in Stone Town, a short walk from many of the main sites, including the Night Market. The view from the rooftop restaurant is excellent. The rooms are OK, and the bathrooms are recently renovated.
great location. oversight of the buzz of the beach/water activity, but far enough removed to relax , soak in the action and enjoy. stunning views/sunsets, spacious. 10 mins walk to the main stone town market.
A beautiful hotel, nice pool areas, in a good location right on the beach but close enough to old town centre. The breakfast was excellent, varied choices and tasted good. Rooms are old and worn but clean.
Great food, Kindly staff And everythink was clean . In the centre. Very good prices. If you want to stay a few days in Zanzibar city here is no better hotel than this. Really Recomend.
