Echoes of the Age of Empires
Hvar is the largest city on the Croatian island of the same name within the Adriatic Sea. The wildly undulating coastline formed a natural harbour here, a fact which didn’t go unnoticed by the Venetians, who captured it as part of their empire. The Venetian Fortress sits atop a hill and 13th-century ramparts descend to the old town.
Another castle from Napoleonic times is on a different hill offering beautiful views over red roofs towards the offshore Pakleni islands sheltering the port. Ferries link Hvar to neighbouring Brač and Vis islands, Split and Ancona in Italy.
Given the size of the city, the amount of Hvar accommodation is staggering, and Booking.com offers everything from luxury hotels with pools to cheap guest houses and beachfront apartments. Although most beaches are rocky, their scenic setting and warm turquoise waters are still a draw.
At the heart of the city is the largest square in Dalmatia. Restaurants and bars spill out onto its cobbles, ending at St Stephen’s Cathedral with its see-through belltower. Around the same time the cathedral was going up, one of Europe’s oldest theatres was constructed in the waterfront Arsenal. The Loggia is the only remain of the Governor’s Palace, and the Hvar Heritage Museum helps to put all this in context.

Beautiful old town.
Beautiful old town. Spectacular view of many surrounded island from the Napoleon trail. The city provided plenty of seating benches throughout the city and rural. I visited other towns in this island that have the same relaxing standards. Thanks to the Croatia government. However, October was not a good month to get access to island tours and most restaurants. I only went to the old town, arriving by ferry in the evening. Absolutely beautiful but even in October it was way, way over touristed. I decided to stop contributing to the problem myself by changing my plans and leaving early the next morning.

Hvar is for you if you love being near the water and sitting in the sunshine. Things i wish I’d taken, more cash, many places operate on a cash only basis and they cash machines charge up to €10 to withdraw from. The cheapest bakeries which are also delicious are near the bus station. Bring insect repellent and insect bite treatments and also bring your own sunscreen as it is incredibly expensive to purchase it on the island. Take shoes you can comfortably walk up and down stairs in and on cobbled streets. Hvar has the most beautiful water I have ever seen, if you take a trip with a taxi boat to one of the smaller island, you'll have a wonderful time. There's a nude beach where fortunately not a lot of people go to cause they're scared of nakedness. Its super party touristy in the main town. Rich british boys and old white men.. everything is super expensive. There's no buses driving around the island so you'll have to rent a scooter or walk a long distance.RenéeGermany

Breakfast on the terrace next to the boats was magical. The room was smallish .. though probably felt smaller because our previous hotel room was huge but the view made up for it entirely . We could hear the music from the concerts until the early hours but I think that comes with the territory in Hvar town centre. We were familiar with the location as we stayed at Hotel Podstine (next door) on a previous visit to Hvar. As Podstine had not opened yet, we stayed at Shades of Blue instead which in hindsight worked out perfectly. The water (and a great swimming spot) is easily accessible down the stairs and Hvar Old Town is a short and scenic walk around the coastal path. We actually forgot out passports when we left and had a flight the next day from Dubrovnik and the hotel staff pulled off a miracle trip with a taxi driver to get our passports delivered overnight so we didn't miss our flights, thats the kind of extra service you never forgot. I was upgraded to a sea view room which I loved. The staff were really lovely. Always happy to help and assist. The hotel is beautiful. The room was perfect and bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was good, lots to choose from. Pool area beautiful, I enjoyed relaxing by the pool and food and drinks service on offer. The beach is beside the hotel. Highly recommend.

Its a relaxed comfortable room and bathroom. The best thing is you step out of the door and you are in the middle of beautiful Hvar. It took about 5 minutes to go to the ferry port. If you are on foot this place is great. Other places were up a steep hill. Photo is the street outside the hotel. There is a great coffee shop at the end of it. It has fresh fruit and a good bakery selection.
