We stayed outside Tarbert but made use of Tarbert for shopping, petrol and dinner. The town is cute (there aren't many towns to speak of on these islands anyway) and has all the basic necessities you'd need during a stay on Harris/Lewis. Obviously, for anything major, you'd have to go to Stornoway, but that doesn't usually apply to people on holidays.

Tarbert is a small island town, with small shops.
Tarbert is a small island town, with small shops. There is a reasonable sized car park in the centre. It has a butcher/grocer store, and a small post office, a friendly small charity shop, and a Bank of Scotland.
For tourist gifts there is the Harris Tweed store near the distillery, as well as the lovely “essence of Harris” soap and candle shop in the town centre, near the Calmac office. There are two hotels: the modern Hotel Hebrides opposite the Calmac office building, and the more upmarket Harris Hotel just up on the road to North Harris: both are ideal bases from which to explore Harris and Lewis, with the mountains, beaches, and cycling routes.
We loved Tarbert, very relaxed and friendly, with a lovely community feel.

Not as much there as I expected, limited choice of places to eat dinner. Be prepared to travel long distances to visit the fabulous pristine white beaches of South Harris. Bring what you need as one shop charged £15:95 for a tube of Voltoral, the Co-op in Stornaway same tube same size £5:95. What a rip off, can't recall the name it was the middle of the street a few doors down from the newsagent, not the shop at the top of the hill.
If you want an amazing meal with a fabulous view try Talla Na Malla, it's around 15 miles South of Tarbet, but so worth it, if there at sunset it's truly beautiful.

Wow! where do I start, the whole place was great, everyone on the Island were really friendly, Dunarain guest house was our choice of stay and have given a 5* review, did a total of 270 miles all around Harris, Stornaway, Butt of Harris, south Harris, and a trip down the Golden Road is a must for any visitor, we will defiantly visit Harris again and allow more time as we only stayed three nights

We were holidaying in November and a lot of Tarbert (and the rest of the island) was closed. If you are self catering there are two small grocery stores but you might need to travel to Stornoway for a larger shop.
The surrounding area - 3 miles south where we were staying was lovely with beautiful views.

Book if you want to go out to eat.
Book if you want to go out to eat. Remember to wear a face mask when shopping. Local people very friendly and helpful. Drive careful and be respectful of passing places and other drivers.
Some businesses still closed due to Covid.
The location was very convenient for taking the ferry. We also loved the room. The bathroom was fantastic. We had a tub and shower - plus great smelling shower/bath products. (I mention that because we had a hotel on Skye that had a tub, but the toiletries they provided were terrible.) I immediately took a bath which was exactly what I needed after all the rain and wind we experienced exploring through the day. We’d booked dinner at the hotel - it was fine and had great service.
Everything was exceptional. The bed was the most comfortable we had slept in anywhere in Scotland, the Bento Box breakfast was out of this world, the shower was of the highest quality, as we're all the furnishings, fixtures, and bedding. Our host though was why we would come back. He was such a kind person and engaging conversationalist with whom we immensely enjoyed spending time.
Everything! Quiet location, but not too far from facilities (providing you have a car of course - about 5 mile from Tarbert?)
For a couple like us it was perfect - plenty of hot water, plenty of kitchen appliances and utensils, washing machine and tumble dryer + cosy log burning stove if needed (we didn’t 😊)
great facilities kitchen equipment toiletries and a change of towels each day if required. beautifully designed and comfortable beds a true home away from home. coffee and tea and biscuits in room and if you don’t fancy cooking you can walk over the road to the hotel and have a lovely breakfast made for you.
Loved the elevated position allowing a view of the harbour …or it will when they finish building it! Portree is an excellent base to explore Harris and Lewis and very convenient for the ferry. Food in the hotel was good and staff friendly. The apartment was very well equipped and beautifully decorated.
Dave and Jane made us feel so welcome. They also really helped us with travel replanning after a ferry cancellation. The location of the hotel is stunning and very convenient for Tarbert. The breakfasts are too die for. Everyday there is a different complementary whisky in the room. What’s not to like?!!
We have nothing but the highest praise for the view, the room, the care, and the hosts. John was a delight, and made every effort to make our stay easy, comfortable, and memorable. We would definitely stay there again and highly recommend it for anyone traveling to Harris.
Excellent across the board. We very comfortable, well-decorated and very well equipped apartments. Location is very convenient for access to the island’s main attractions. Friendly service and very good restaurant. All in all a great choice on Harris.
I loved everything! The staff were so welcoming and friendly, the room was super comfy and clean, great power shower and so handy having a fridge.
Free parking outside the hotel and a fantastic location for visiting places in South and North Harris
Our room at the Hotel Hebrides was well appointed and extreme clean. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided, with snacks, and a small refrigerator. We ate in the bar a couple of times, and the food was great, and the staff very pleasant.
Amazing location, very beautiful set up and lots of amenities. Lovely to have the Essence of Harris soaps in the bathroom and shop across the street. Nice touch having milk in the fridge, and the Prosecco.
Great location for traveling Harris and Lewis. Nice rural setting and better than 4 star breakfast. Take the Dunarrain Special as a breakfast starter. You will search me out and thank me.
Lovely B&B accomodation in a pretty spot close to Tarbert.
Great hosts and yummy bento box breakfasts.
Very clean and modern with comfy beds.
Convenient location for the ferry to Skye.
Very helpful hosts, beautiful location, very comfortable accommodation, easy to find, very close to the Uig - Tarbert ferry, amazing views whilst eating breakfast! Very relaxing!
