The half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets and brightly painted façades of medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber wouldn’t be out of place in a fairytale. Several fantastical films have been set in this gem on the scenic Romantic Road, passing from Würzburg to Füssen via Bavaria’s most enchanting towns.
Uniquely designed gates allow access to the historic centre through walls partly covered with tiled roofs. Walking along the walls offers a different perspective of the town’s colourful flowers, step gables and towers. The town hall has the tallest tower, whose far-reaching views include the large Marktplatz, home of the Christmas market. The Christmas Museum is a year-round winter wonderland, as is the shop of Käthe Wohlfahrt, the internationally renowned German Christmas decoration producer.
On a different note, the Crime Museum houses medieval torture instruments including a ducking stool. Holy Blood and Last Supper altarpieces form the focal point of towering St James’ Church, a stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.
In the River Tauber valley outside the centre are lush gardens, one containing Toppler Castle, a bizarre structure resembling a house on a tower. Also in the valley is a double-arched stone bridge.

We stayed three nights and spent 2-1/2 days in the old town.
We stayed three nights and spent 2-1/2 days in the old town. We’ve been here many times but there’s plenty to see and do. We recommend the Rothenberger Handworker’s house tour, an ancient house unchanged since the 1700s, St Jakob’s church, the criminal museum, the night watchman’s tour, and walking the town’s perimeter walls and towers. These help illustrate medieval life and how people lived back then, and how good we have it today!

This is a stunning walled medieval town!
This is a stunning walled medieval town! You can walk around most of the wall - stork nests can be seen if you look carefully! Every street is beautiful with gift shops and cafes. The castle gardens are great to relax in and at the bottom you are rewarded with an amazing view down to the river Tauber.

Its indeed a Fairytale town (fortified).
Its indeed a Fairytale town (fortified).
One night stay would be perfect to enjoy the old town´s colorful buildings and architecture with many towers standing high at every corner of the old town guarded by city walls (Day view and Night view of the old is must).
It has a very rich heritage to tell as you stroll through the old town wondering why this was built and the purpose. This curiosity was sated by the night watchman´s 1hr guided tour that starts in Market square.
The city wall is one of amazing structure which I had never seen before that runs through out the town like a fortress hiding behind is the beautiful buildings from medieval age still preserved with many reconstructed.
There are many places to visit and for me the Rothenburg museum was the best to know about the history, going back in time (approx. 700 yrs).
Plenty of restaurants and food was pretty good too, best snack "Schnee ball"
I wish I would visit this town again on a full moon night :-)

My family loves to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
My family loves to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The town is very walkable and there are plenty of places to explore for a few days. Check out the museum's and take your time walking through the park outside the walls. If staying overnight take a trip with the nightwatchman. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is beautiful in Autumn and magical at Christmas.

There are many people that fleet through Rothenburg on a day...
There are many people that fleet through Rothenburg on a day tour but it does help to have a couple of days to walk around the outskirts of the city wall, to truly appreciate the place. We stumbled upon a little playground outside the city walls and it was the best time we had. There are some good restaurants but do read the reviews; Michaelango was a win as was the Taj Mahal. The restaurants and some shops do seem to indicate a preference for cash over card. It will also be wise to plan where to park beforehand and to understand the charges of parking within the city walls. Also, if you drive within the city walls, be prepared for narrow cobbled streets and driving through ancient gateways.

This was our second stay at the hotel and booked it a second time because of our previous experience. The rooms are a little smaller than average, but that was expected in the center of old town Rothenburg. The location was excellent and near the Market Square. Parking was available in a secure lot. The beer garden associated with the hotel is probably the best in town, and the restaurant was excellent - both breakfast and dinner. Highly recommended.
The location is excellent, inside the historic walls. The building has a certain charm, and even if old, it is in a very good shape. The room was spacious, simple, but nicely decorated and welcoming. The bathroom was large, nice and very clean. The garage is part of the building and you can reach it also from the inside. Very good breakfast, unlike other hotels in Germany. Very friendly and helpfull staff.
Staff were very friendly, but under staffed if your expecting a hotel experience, which the cost of a hotel room up the street was basically the same price as our room, which we reserved on Booking.com, but it was not what we received. We had to find another hotel but still were charged the full price. Breakfast served the equivalent of Tang for juice, weak coffee, but the plums and pears were delicious.
We want to thank the owner of hotel for a wonderful stay. He was always on top of what we needed. A drink after a long drive, a fan to keep us cool in our room. We felt like family! And breakfast was out of this world!
We wanted an Old World experience in Germany 🇩🇪 and it was definitely that at this hotel! We will definitely recommend this hotel! Thanks Again!
Everything! The excellent staff, weekend and weekday, were so welcoming and made you feel so comfortable. The charming building is beautifully decorated. The breakfasts were wonderful, with many choices. Rooms and building are very clean. Excellent location in such a charming village. Our favorite hotel on our month vacation in Germany and Austria.
The location was quite remote for walking around, but closeby to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The hotel has a long tradition which can be seen in the breakfast room. Our room was in a separate building and was very spacious. Breakfast was nice and is highly recommended. The cancellation policy (which we didn't use) is one of the best I have seen.
The location of the property is within the city walls and is well placed to walk within Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber. The marketplace can be reached within 5 minutes. Very comfortable apartment with amenities for a great stay. Extremely clean. Lovely host who was very helpful and friendly. we paid for the secure parking close by.
Very kind and helpful staff. Wonderful location just in the middle of the amazing town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Nice breakfast and parking service available, which is an advantage, given the location and traffic restrictions. Historic house in an historic city. A charming, exquisite experience.
They accommodated our family of five when we arrived. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the train station and really close to the walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The food was delicious for dinner and lunch. We also were able to store our luggage after we checked out which was wonderful.
One of the best hotels in Europe we have stayed in. There were so many cute areas to sit and relax in the hotel after spending the day walking around. The staff was superb! From hotel check in to the breakfast staff. They went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed.
this place is amazing. absolutely killer location only steps away from the main streets of the cutest bloody German town you’ve ever seen! great owners who were very helpful. bonus that one of the best restaurants we have been to in Germany is below the hotel. get the goulash. wow!
A gem of a find. The staff were professional and friendly, the breakfast was delicious, but the main thing that impressed me was the exquisite room. Decorated so beautifully! This hotel felt a step above many of the other hotels we have stayed in in Germany.
Very easy street parking for $12/day, or adjacent Burg Hotel private garage parking for $10/day. Amazing hospitality. Best view ever from top floor and from breakfast!!!!!! Astounding place. The rooms were very large because we booked well in advance.
Absolutely gorgeous hotel! And GREAT ROOMS! The hotel was located perfectly near everything and easy to find. When staying here although renovation due to the age of the building. You can still feel and see the historical value the hotel has.
Best place to halt when in Rothenburg o d T. The owner is sweet and helpful. Rooms are super clean and the hotel serves breakfast (for 10€ pp). Breakfast is worth that money I would say. The location is perfect ( 10 - 12 mins) to Markplatz.
The location is very central to the old part of the city. Effortless access to all attractions. The hotel restaurant serves the best Schnitzel we have tasted in Bavaria. The staff is very helpful and funny.
Hotel is located in heart of lovely Rothenburg ob der Tauber with all sightseeing points within walking distance. The room was big enough and clean. Friendly staff served simple but nice breakfast.
Great location. Lovely historic building. Great breakfast. Very comfortable and quiet room. Rothenburg ob der Tauber old town is stunning. We loved staying here.
