Dom Dinis Marvão, hotel in Marvão

Located within the walls of the Marvão Castle, at the top of the high village of Marvão, Dom Dinis Marvão features a rooftop terrace with a Jacuzzi® and panoramic views of the countryside below.

The Hotel is centrally located inside the historic walls of the village within easy walking distance to the castle and all along the ramparts which offer amazing views. Plentiful free parking was available next to the property. Breakfast had a lot of variety and staff was able to accommodate us with GF bread and recommended the very good Varanda do Alentejo restaurant for supper. The town has a high end feel to it with all the buildings nicely renovated while keeping their historic charm.

Quinta d'Abegoa, hotel in Marvão

Located on the slope of Marvão, Quinta d’Abegoa is just a 5-minute drive from Marvão Castle. It offers spacious villas with well-stocked kitchens and barbecue facilities. Free Wi-Fi is available.

We stayed at Quinta d'Abegoa's apartment, Casa do Souto, which is very cosy and ideal for two people. Everything is really well thought out so the apartment felt bigger than it actually was. The bed is very comfortable and the shower is excellent. The outside space is beautiful - we loved sitting out, listening to the birds and the bells from the sheep, while enjoying the views of the both the castle and over towards the mountains and Spain. We made the most of being able to walk to restaurants in Marvao (although it is uphill all the way!) but we also cooked at the property - the kitchen is tiny but is very well-equipped and has everything you need to self-cater. Our host, Rosa, looked after us extremely well, bringing us breakfast every day, and nothing was too much trouble. We love the area around Marvao and will definitely return for another stay at Casa do Souto.

Casa do Vale, hotel in Marvão

Located 8 km from Roman City of Ammaia, Casa do Vale offers air-conditioned accommodation with a balcony. This country house features a private pool, a garden and free private parking.

A fabulous accommodation. We were a group and therefore rented both houses. Everything was perfect. It's easy to get there, the houses were very nice and clean, well decorated and with more utensils in the kitchen than you would expect in a rental accommodation. The houses were designed in such a way that nothing was missing, such as the monitoring that was carried out via WhatsApp by Cristina, always making sure that everything was ok. The owners even took care to turn on the air conditioning before we arrive. We loved our stay and will certainly return in summer, when will be possible to enjoy the pool and barbecue, places that seemed equally nice and inviting us to use them.

We stayed at Dom Dinis, overlooking the valley below, in December 2023. Hardly any tourists, wonderfully friendly area. Be sure to visit the church (Igreja de Santiago) of which Saramago wrote on his journey around Portugal! We ate at the excellent Varanda do Alentejo, the lamb stew was fantastic.

The castle is a must see.

The castle is a must see. The views from all directions were unobstructed and gave one the feeling of what it must have been like centuries before when the castle was used as a defensive weapon. Well worth the trip and one had access to almost the entire outer wall.

We stayed in Marvão for 3 days, 2 nights and spent the days touring around. I HIGHLY recommend taking the biking tour with Rail Bike Marvão, it's 16km through the heart of Marvão's nature. I also HIGHLY recommend you visit the small town or Castelo de Vide.

Amazing old town and stunning castle and scenery. So quiet and relaxing. Even though we have been in the castle and museum, we intend to come back and do it all again because it was such an enjoyable experience.

Just being here gives a lift to the soul!

Just being here gives a lift to the soul! It is beautiful, everyone is so friendly, every winding street you walk down brought a smile to my face, and THAT VIEW!! You turn a corner and it takes your breath away. I walked here from Castelo de Vide and the path was well marked and gorgeous, with birds of prey hovering and I even saw what I think is an Egyptian mongoose.... Lots of beautiful arts and crafts and good restaurants. I stayed at the Estalagem de Marvao which couldnt be faulted, really beautiful and friendly. Totally recommended (tho some parts of the town walls are not for the faint hearted - but there are plenty of steps down if it gets too much for the vertiginous!).

Of all of our stays in Portugal, this was the most welcoming. The host truly made us feel at home. The breakfasts was excellent and served in a dining room with a lovely view. The location was magical, right on the top edge of town with views over the valley and sunset and a quick walk to the castle. As some of the other reviews mention, google maps is very confused about Marvao. Just follow the main road through the gate and then follow the inside of the wall up to Casa da Avore. There is ample parking right next to the hotel.

The position is excellent. The owner is a very helpful and friendly man who speaks good English and the other staff I met were also lovely. Breakfast in the breakfast room was generous and fresh. Well catered. In general comment on Marvao itself, obviously the streets are very narrow and parking is available in various places. If you can judge it without previously being there, choose a parking spot at the higher elevation as carrying your luggage is difficult and bag wheels on cobblestone streets don't work.

We loved our stay at Casinha de Marvao. The house was clean and comfortable and it was really cosy with the wood burner. The kitchen was well equipped. The location was great - beautiful views towards Spain and we enjoyed being able to leave the house to wander around the town and castle in the evening to see the sunset and during the day for more exploring of the castle. We enjoyed the well marked walking trails to Portagem and Castelo de Vide and so didn’t need to use a car during our stay.

The idyllic peaceful rural location on a working farm with sheep with bells. Jose was a delightful host and the breakfasts were excellent. Our room was spacious and the traditional stone building was nice and cool and the pool was great for cooling off. The bed was very comfortable. There were some nice restaurants about half an hour's walk away and nearby Marvao is well worth a visit. We spent 4 nights here and enjoyed it very much. It is great if you are looking for peace and quiet.

It was adventurous to drive the narrow, very narrow streets of historical Marvão. Lol. Still have PTSD. However, I wouldn't trade the stay for something more conventional. The host was amazing, no English, but google was helpful. She was extremely friendly and warm despite waiting for us for a couple of hours... Greeted us with a local liquor. :)) after the drive it was needed. Beds were comfy, the house was very clean and cozy. Perfect locao, right in the midst of everything.

We have stayed at this hotel a few times when we have visited Marvao. Firstly there is free parking in the square directly outside the hotel. The hotel is a family business and the owner was on reception to greet us and do the check in. We had a room on the second floor with wonderful views over the valley. The beds are comfortable and plenty of lovely soft pillows. Breakfast is served in the restaurant on the lower ground floor. Plenty of choice and fresh scrambled eggs.

Don't stay at Varanda Do Alentejo if you don't have breakfast. It's the best breakfast we've ever had at a hotel. The location is excellent, Marvao represents the classic Portuguese village. The view is gorgeous. The Castle of Marvao is just 3 minutes away from Varanda Do Alentejo and is worth visiting. Mr Fernando was very kind to us. The parking place is right at the property and your car will be safe. Varanda Do Alentejo also has a restaurant, which you will appreciate.

Gorgeous little house, completely redone with attention to the minimal details. very peculiar division of the space, which makes it very cozy and architecturally amazing. Everything seems to be brand new, sparkling clean, and they thought of absolutely everything a guest May want or need. The hosts Alexandra and José were fantastic. A flawless, extremely comfortable and peaceful place firm which to enjoy the magic of Marvão!

A beautiful little cottage tucked away in the medieval village of Marvao. There's a castle right next door and the village itself is fun to wander around in. The owner of the hotel was friendly and gracious, and the room was perfect. It felt like I was staying in a distant relative's home and not a hotel. Also, the breakfast was incredible. Definitely sign up for breakfast.

Across the cobbled stone road from the hotel is the hotel’s bar/cafe which also has a lovely terrace. Staff are very pleasant and helpful. I’ll definitely stay there again.
