The City of Popes
Located in Southern France, Avignon is the largest capital of the department of Vaucluse. Classified as a UNESCO world Heritage Site, the charming city centre is home to the palace of the popes, Rocher des Doms, and the bridge of Avignon.
The historic Palais des Papes is one of the most significant medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Set within a square with the same name, the Papal Palace is an important tourist attraction where you can see the pope’s private chambers and frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti.
Le Pont d’Avignon was built in the Middle Ages and, according to the legend, a young shepherd called Benezet was inspired by angels to build the bridge. The children’s song "Sur Le Pont D'Avignon" is now famous all over the world.
The beautiful gardens of Rocher des Doms are ideal for a promenade or picnic. Featuring a large pond, swans, ducks and lush vegetation, this place is perfect for relaxing moments. From the top, you can enjoy the views of the Rhône.

I’m not happy about leaving a bad review, but I have to share honest feedback to be fair to future travelers. This place was not at all what we hoped for! The neighborhood is not clean and doesn’t seem safe. There’s very limited parking on the street, so I recommend getting there no later than 17:00, as you’ll have to park really far or pay extra 20 euros for their private garage. The first bedroom was musty and had a strange odor. The blankets on the beds seemed very old. The linen didn’t match and neither did the curtains. There were stains on the couch. The dish sponge was old and dirty. The beds were very uncomfortable, hard as if it was just a board. The door to the second bedroom had a big brown stain on it. The worst part was the shower, so much mold everywhere, it smelled bad, couldn’t use it! Stay away!

I liked the city, with Palais du Papes etc, but also the surroundings. I travelled in bus to Pont du Gard, St Remy de Provence (van Gogh area!) and southern part of Parque Natural Régional du Luberon, all very exciting places.

Well worth a visit .
Well worth a visit . It still reflects the mediaeval days of the Popes, but has splendid modern shops, a great market and a whole spectrum of good restaurants and is small enough for old people like us to cope with

Beautiful medieval city with impressive palaces, churches, walls etc. A wonderful place to hang around. After sunset it might feel a bit uncomfortable, however I did not feel particularly unsafe at any point.

Yves made us feel at home in his nicely furnished house and we had a spacious room with a nicely decorated bathroom, all very clean and tasteful. We enjoyed the extended French breakfast with cheese and ham and fruits. If it hadn't rained we would have sat in the beautiful garden for breakfast, but we enjoyed the pretty dining room as well. It felt like a private garden. Near reception there was also sitting places in the inner yard that contributed to the cozy atmosphere. The hotel itself is situated on the main street between the Central Station and Palais des Papes, so everything was close. Last time in Avignon we stayed in a different hotel, but I loved this room much better.
