Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the north-west. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city centre are Roman theatre remains, while columns from the Roman forum stand next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square houses some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Watersports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffee houses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.

When coming to Trieste, you shouldn't miss a stroll to Barcola in the summer a really lovely place to share an afternoon with friends having a swim in trasparent and green sea water. Trieste offers a wide range of typical food but also international options; in the morning do not miss Via XX Settembre with its characteristic small cafeteria and bars with tasty street food. At night you can enjoy a drink outside the lively pubs even in winter! If you like caves, there is the Grotta Gigante, not far from town where you can experiment a journey in one of the tallest European Grotto. Trieste is fantastic, very walkable, stunning architecture, good shopping, and plenty of excellent places to wine and dine. Public transport is very accessible for anyone wanting a day trip, perhaps if the weather is not cooperating, and it's very easy to hop on the train to visit Venice for a few hours, or to take a bus trip to Slovenia for the day. Trieste is gorgeous and it`s worth visiting. There are loads to see in the area and you can also visit Croatia, Slovenia, as they are very close. It is easy to go from A to B with public transport (although I found the ticket system far too overcomplicated and be prepared that unless you speak / read Italian you will be a bit lost). Driving is not really recommended for inexperienced drivers as the roads are super steep and most of them are narrow. I would not visit the city with small kids in a buggy, because it can be very frustrating to push a buggy on these narrow / steep streets, but if your kids are older than 6-8 and can walk a lot, it is a great area to explore.

An excellent starting point for visiting Venice, Istria, Slovenia... Excellent food in restaurants, which are very affordable (20-50 EUR per person). House wines cost 7 EUR for half a liter, and they are excellent. Extremely well stocked stores.

During summer they provide a nice basic breakfast which helps start the day with the right foot. We had a room with shared bathroom and there was always an available bathroom when we needed it. The bathroom is big and comfortable. The room had a desk and the wifi speed was remarkably fast - a rarity on budget hotels.
